Comfort & Performance

Take time to set your poles up correctly to avoid discomfort and vibration. This will also maximise the results you will get from using them

Adjusting the poles

Getting the height right for YOU

WALX Xcelerator poles need to be adjusted at a slightly lower level than a typical hiking, nordic or fitness walking poles which typically have a straight shaft. The 15 degree angle and unique handle means you do not have to ‘push’ with the heel of the hand – simply allow upper body weight to transfer through the whole hand. WALX Stability poles also have the 15 degree angle but is used more upright, may need to be slightly higher.

A great starting point for adjusting is to loosen the poles and stand with elbow at 90 degree angle – push slightly until the poles are at the correct height which is just below elbow level for total body walking. Tighten the pole adjuster and follow use video guidelines below for comfort.

Our 'get a grip' guide!

The WALX ergonomic handle is quite a complex design so please don’t just try to grab and go as it might feel uncomfortable.

The handle is designed to be held in a certain way to ensure that it aids both the pole position and the perfect wrist angle.

Take time to understand the concept which should be relaxed, supportive but comfortable.

This will provide more stability and help you to feel more natural as you walk with an improved posture. It can boost confidence, help with shuffling and reduce falls by raising the eye line and breathing can be improved too.

The key features to be aware of are;

  • The left and right handles are marked clearly on top with L and R
  • The handles is designed to avoid over gripping as that affects the pole angle so be gentle!
  • The lower base ridge is for support not to be ‘pushed’ against
  • The thumb ridge is is the unique feature which helps to spread the load through the whole hand and not simply via the heel of the hand which is typical with many strapless poles
  • Once you are holding the handle correctly, the tip points slightly inwards because that mirrors the natural walking arm swing we want to capture – this in turn helps with pole position and comfort.

These drills will help you to understand the unique WALX concept

Before using the poles try walking without poles if you can but with a nice relaxed arm swing. Notice how your hand should form a natural soft curl with the thumb following a straight line along the arm from the elbow.

Next pick up your  WALX poles and follow the steps in the grip guide on the right.

It helps to start off by swinging the arms but keep the pole tips off the ground (if you can) behind you initially and then drop the tips and begin to allow them to engage with the ground once you have a natural walking rhythm If you feel awkward at all, return to this drill which should help you to walk naturally with one leg and the opposite arm forward at any time.

Follow the steps in the videos to get the right soft grip and pole angle and if possible book a Power of Poles session or one to one consultation if you have medical conditions –  your local Instructor or specialist will be able to assess your gait and iron out any co-ordination issues.
